Cowboys and Aliens PDF Print E-mail

Cowboys and Aliens, or Cowboys vs Aliens is an original film.  Aliens invade Earth in search of gold and start studying humans to learn our strengths and weaknesses.  Ok, so as far fetched as aliens, beings that can traverse the stars, needing gold is - this movie is worth watching.  I went to see it in the cheap theaters and was pleasantly surprised.  It would be well worth the cost of a full ticket price.

Harrison Ford plays an ex Colonial, Daniel Craig an outlaw, and Olivia Wilde an (SPOILER) alien - but she's an alien that's here to help us.  The plot feels contiguous and the acting is top notch.  The special effects leave nothing to be desired.  It's a shame that Cowboys and Aliens didn't gross much money.  Hollywood needs to create more original films like this.

The only problem with the movie is that it seems to drag on at times.  When there's no action going on it feels like you could get up to go to the bathroom and not miss anything.

Overall I would give the movie a B+

Go see it in theaters while you still can.

The last Transformers movie, Revenge of the Fallen, has the distinction of being the highest grossing blockbuster worst rated movie of all time.  The writers strike is to blame Revenge of the Fallen being poorly rated.  Fortunately for Transformers Dark of the Moon there is no writers strike this time.  Dark of the Moon shows us that good writing that we saw from the first Transformers movie.

The only gripe I have with Dark of the Moon is it's running time.  At two hours and thirty four minutes Dark of the Moon can be a long movie.  But it's worth it.  The beginning of the movie contains a lot of humor, good humor too.  The end of the movie contains quite a few special effects that seem to take a long time.  But they're put into place for the 3D audiences.

Nothing is there just for the sake of being there.  We either have good humor or something that drives the plot of some kind of great special effect.  The 3D in this movie is amazing.  I suggest seeing it in IMAX 3D.  The larger screen plus 3D really makes you feel like your in the movie.

Over all I would give Transformers Dark of the Moon a 9 out of 10.  The special effects were great, the writing was great, the acting was well done.  Everything but the running time in Dark of the Moon is a positive.  Go see it, you won't be disappointed.

Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides PDF Print E-mail

Johnny Depp reprises his role as Captain Jack Sparrow.  Sparrow is easily one of the best roles I can remember, so it's no surprise that Depp was eager to get back into his pirate clothes.  Unfortunately, Captain Jack Sparrow is the only authentic part of Pirates of the Caribbean.  Sure, Geoffrey Rush is back as Barbosa, but he doesn't feel like his old self.  Perhaps it's because Barbosa left the pirates life and became a privateer for the King of England, perhaps it's because the Black Pearl doesn't even make an appearance, perhaps it's because the previous movies are so good that this one has a lot to live up to.  But On Stranger Tides does not feel like a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Like I said, Depp plays Captain Jack Sparrow.  His gold toothed grin graces the screen with all the verve that he did in the previous movies.  He improvises and escape in London that could only be done by Captain Jack Sparrow.  He is really fun to see on the screen and makes this movie worth watching.

Not all movies deserve the poor reviews that critics give them.  Unfortunately for the Green Lantern, those poor reviews are well deserved.  The Green Lantern stars Ryan Reynolds as test pilot Hal Jordan.  After an unfortunate accident he receives a ring that lets you turn anything you can think of into reality.  There are many Green Lanterns in this universe (think of them like the Jedi from Star Wars) that are set out to protect their assigned sectors.

If that is a little too far out for you, you're not alone.  But the story behind the Green Lantern isn't what makes it a mediocre movie (after all, Thor is just as fantastical and was a terrific movie).  There are just too many story arcs in the Green Lantern that seem forced.  When Hal Jordan crashes the test plane it's supposedly because he suddenly went into this bought of fear after seeing his dads picture in the cockpit.  It just didn't add up.  The whole fear story arc was important to the movie because the baddie in the movie is a being that thrives on the fear of others.  But the audience never really understands Hal Jordans fear.  The fear story isn't the only thing that seemed forced throughout the movie either.

All of the comedic devices used throughout the movie didn't seem to work quite right.  Some were spoiled in the trailers so by the time we got to the movie they weren't funny anymore.  The love story between Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively didn't seem to work out either.  The movie needed another fifteen minutes or so to smooth out all of these plot devices, but it already cost $200 million to make so adding anything to the movie was a gamble.

My biggest gripe with The Green Lantern is the main antagonist.  All of the Green Lanterns in the movie have some kind of humanoid form.  Some looked like fish, others looked like big pigs.  But they all had two legs, two arms, a torso and a head.  We could identify with them.  But the main bad guy in this movie was a nebulous blob that just sort of floated around sucking up people to grow stronger.  We can't identify with that.  Instead of being afraid of him I found myself wondering if he should go on a diet.

Because of the nebulous blob thing we didn't get to see any badass fight scenes.  I was expecting for a $200 million movie that there would at least be some good fight scenes.  At the beginning of the movie the Green Lantern, the best fighter among them all, dies in a very weak battle against the blobby beast.  And at the end of the movie Ryan Reynolds tricks the blob into getting to close to the sun so it gets sucked in and dies.

The studio should've spent less money on the blobs special effects and more money  on a better script...

Thor is Marvel Studios fourth movie.  The first two Iron Man movies were highly successful (even if the second Iron Man wasn't as good) and The Hulk was profitable, though some wouldn't consider it a successful movie.  Thor will probably end up being somewhere in the middle.  Not that there's anything wrong with Thor as a movie.  Thor is entertainment at its finest.

Thor is available in both 3D and regular D.  I was happy to see the option to see it in regular D because the move was not shot in 3D.  When 3D is added after the fact it just gets in the way of the movie experience.  It darkens the movie a lot and doesn't add nearly as much as a movie shot with 3D cameras does.
